October — Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Letter from Narus CEO

Dear Colleagues and Friends of Narus,

For the past six years, the Department of Homeland Security has designated October as “Cyber Security Awareness Month.” This campaign’s aim is to educate all citizens and key public and private sector partners on how to guard against cyber threats at home, work and school. This year’s theme focuses on society’s shared responsibility in addressing the cyber security problem. In this digital age, everyone in the world is connected via the Internet, and either assumes that they are safe, don’t care or only are looking to protect their individual area of concern.

Countless cyber security events, including cyberwarfare, distributed denial of service, worms, viruses, cyber robot armies with criminal intent, phishing attacks and many more have plagued the world on an ever-increasing pace over the last few years -- with no end in sight.

In 2007, an attack was launched on many of Estonia’s banking, media and federal Web sites, immobilizing much of its critical Internet infrastructure for days. This was followed in 2008 by cyber attacks on Georgia’s Web sites. Recently, government and commercial Web sites in the United States and South Korea experienced a sustained wave of cyber attacks. While cyber criminals are targeting larger, more critical infrastructures all around the world, everyday citizens are also feeling the pain. According to Symantec, cyber crime has surpassed illegal drug trafficking as a criminal moneymaker, and 1 in 5 citizens will become a victim. Given these overwhelming statistics and potential compromised safety of our citizens, it is essential that each of us understands the role we play in securing the cyber world. The time has come to acknowledge the monumental toll cyber threats take on the safety of our nation and our world.

In an effort to protect critical national infrastructures and national security, governments around the world are implementing new strategies and utilizing new technologies. Among them, the Obama Administration announced its cyber security plan and budget in May 2009; the United Kingdom announced its cyber security strategy in September 2009; and South Korea is reportedly planning to launch its cyber security agency in 2010.

As the leader in real-time traffic intelligence for the protection and management of large IP networks, Narus has spent years working with our customers to understand and secure the world’s largest and most complex IP networks. Government and service provider customers around the world see NarusInsight as an integral piece of their cyber security solution as they move to protect their critical infrastructure.

Whether you are a user of the cyber world, a supplier to it, or someone responsible for managing and protecting it, you are playing a vital role in ensuring safe, reliable, and robust communications and commerce.

Thank you for doing your part to secure the cyber world.

Sincerely,

Greg Oslan
